Tinicum is a township in Delaware County and has a population of roughly 4,096 (2018). It is more popularly known as “Tinicum Island” or “The Island”. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Indians. The Swedes, under the leadership of Johan Printz made Tinicum the Capital of the New Sweden Colony in 1643. It became a township in the state of Pennsylvania in 1780.

The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge – Dedicated to serving the citizens in the region and provides open space along with protecting their natural resources. It serves to protect the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in the state of Pennsylvania and consists of roughly 200 acres.
