Pitman is a borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey and has a population of roughly 8,805 (2019). The area known as Pitman Grove started when there was land chosen in multiple townships to be set aside for a Methodist summer camp in 1871. The borough was named for Rev. Charles Pitman, a Methodist minister. The area had an auditorium like location acting as a central meeting ground with twelve roads serving as “spokes” on a wheel.

Pitman Police – Starting with appointing its first police chief in 1876, the department has been considered one of the most progressive within Gloucester County. It currently consists of fourteen full time sworn members and one civilian employee.
McCowan Memorial Library – In early 1919, two women started discussing the difficulty of obtaining books from other libraries and suggested the need for a library in Pitman. The library officially was formed in June 1919.
